Poikiloderma of Civatte
Poikiloderma of Civatte is a common, long-lasting skin condition in adults with lighter skin colors. It is thought to be caused by long-term sun exposure. Poikiloderma of Civatte appears as color changes in the skin due to sun damage to the neck and sometimes the upper-middle area of the chest.
Who's At Risk?
Poikiloderma of Civatte affects women more often than men. This condition is more common with increased age and in individuals with lighter skin colors.
Signs & Symptoms
Poikiloderma of Civatte usually affects the front and sides of the neck. The upper-middle chest is also sometimes affected. The area appears as a blotchy redness. Fine blood vessels in the skin are often seen. About half of people with poikiloderma of Civatte mention itching, burning, and flushing in the area.
Self-Care Guidelines
To help prevent this condition from occurring or worsening, use sunscreens, wear sun-protective clothing, and avoid peak sun hours (between 10 AM and 3 PM).
Treatments
Certain laser therapies can help improve the skin’s appearance. Your medical professional will also likely encourage sun-protective measures, like those noted in the Self-Care Guidelines, to prevent worsening of the condition.
Visit Urgency
Poikiloderma of Civatte is primarily a cosmetic condition that does not require treatment, but see a medical professional if you are concerned about its appearance.
