Child & Elder Care

Supporting those in your care through thoughtful awareness.

Child and elder care settings involve close contact and shared spaces, often with people who may not be able to recognize or communicate skin concerns. Awareness of common skin issues helps you respond with confidence and care, supporting safety and well‑being for those in your care and their families.

Noticing and Sharing to Support Those in Your Care

Learn about skin concerns you may notice in child and elder care settings. This information can help support conversations with families and clarify when a medical check‑in may be helpful.

Childcare & Daycare Professionals

Because young children can’t always say what’s bothering them, skin concerns may show up as changes in behavior. Scratching or picking, crying when touched, fever, fussiness, or low energy can all be signs that something may need attention.

Elder Care & Senior Living Professionals

For older adults, it’s often most helpful to notice what’s new or different from usual patterns. Redness, swelling, warmth, or breaks in the skin, especially over pressure areas, as well as pain with touch, confusion, withdrawal, fever, or low energy can be signs something needs attention.

Sharing observations with families

  • Describe what you notice.
“I’m noticing some irritation on the skin here.”
  • Invite conversation.
    “Have you seen this before?”
  • Respect privacy, roles, and family decision-making.
“I wanted to share this so you’re aware.”

Supporting next steps

  • Check whether a medical professional is already involved.
“Have you had a chance to talk with a doctor about this?”
  • Gently suggest a medical check‑in when helpful.
“It may be helpful to check in with a health care provider about this.”
  • Share why follow‑up can be useful in care settings.
“Getting it checked can help keep everyone comfortable and support daily routines.”
