In the adult, there are several conditions that can affect the scalp. Alopecia areata is a type of hair loss that is due to a person's own immune system attacking his or her hair follicles. In men, though, the most common cause of hair loss is male pattern baldness, which is a largely hereditary problem, but many treatments do exist to address hair loss. An even more common problem that occurs on the scalp is dandruff, called seborrheic dermatitis, and it is due to overgrowth of skin cells. Some men also suffer from acne keloidalis nuchae, which is a type of scarring due to chronic infection of follicles. Occasionally, pilar cysts will grow from the scalp. These are cysts filled with skin debris and may need to be removed in a minor surgical procedure. See the images below for more information on these and other conditions.
