The pictures below link to information about several conditions that can affect the toes in adults. The toes suffer many problems simply caused by wearing shoes. Calluses and corns are due to footwear rubbing on the skin of the toes and can create hard and painful areas on the foot. Athlete's foot (tinea pedis, ringworm of the foot) is a fungal infection that thrives in the moist environment created by wearing shoes. Shoes are not entirely to blame for foot conditions, however. Gout is a problem with metabolism that causes uric acid crystals to deposit in the joint, and it most often starts by affecting the toes.
